Schubert’s Song Cycles

Beethoven may have invented the song cycle but it was Schubert who brought it to maturity setting a style for such cycles that has affected Western composers for two centuries. Invariably marked by human disaster, these cycles plumb the depths of loneliness and despair. They are threnodies for lost love and yet in performance they seem to offer consolation while also holding us in their icy grip.
