Glamping by design – an epic Welsh adventure

2017 is Visit Wales’s ‘Year of Legends’ and as part of this wide cultural programme aimed at encouraging visitors to explore the legendary landscape of Wales, an anonymous design competition recently invited entrants to design self-contained luxury ‘glamping’ units to the value of £11,000 per unit, showcasing Welsh materials and legends.

Eight winning projects were selected, by designers as far apart as Sydney, Kent and Carmarthenshire. The winning designs will be developed to form a unique pop-up hotel in three stunning locations in south, mid and north Wales, to be announced shortly, with holiday-makers taking part in ‘legendary’ adventures as part of the package.

We hear from one of the team who originally conceived the competition, Dafydd Tomos of George + Tomos Penseiri, Machynlleth and two of the shortlisted designers, Niall Maxwell of Carmarthenshire-based Rural Office for Architecture and Carwyn Jones of the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth.

Chaired by Gerwyn Evans of Visit Wales, one of the competition judges, the event will provide a chance to ask questions about the winning designs and the plans for the pop-up hotel, as well as glamping and tourism in Wales in the broader sense.
