Brother and Sister in Music – Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn

If Felix Mendelssohn was precocious as a composer, then his sister Fanny was equally gifted, and until her brother left home she acted as his principal artistic advisor. It is only very recently that we have come to appreciate Fanny’s gifts as a musician with over 500 compositions to her name. Brother and sister, both beneficiaries of a desire amongst educated Jews to assimilate into German cultural life, were important composers and deeply devoted. Indeed Felix perhaps never fully recovered from Fanny’s death in 1847, dying just months after his sister.
