Still Life: The Touchstone of the Painter

25 January to 29 February 2020
Bridge Gallery

In a landscape or portrait the subject already exists; the still life is created by the painter. Its style is governed by cultural precedence and preference; its content from choices made, perhaps half a life time ago. Serendipity, too, plays a vital part. Consequently still life paintings are utterly unique and endlessly diverse. In Edouard Manet’s words: ‘they are the touchstone of the painter’.
